Roystone Grange is a spectacular hillfarm in a deep limestone valley in the White Peak district of Derbyshire which attracts thousands of visitors every year. This book describes a decade of archaeological research which has been devoted to unravelling its remarkable history. In common with many Peak-land farms, Roystone has evolved over 6,000 years from a prehistoric encampment to a Roman mining village, and from that to a Cistercian sheep ranch, finally becoming a hillfarm at the time of the Reformation. Its most unusual feature is the web of drystone field walls criss-crossing a picturesque landscape. Wellpreserved stretches of walling date from prehistoric, Roman and medieval times. The book ends with an account of Roystone today, describing its transition from an impoverished hillfarm to a heritage landscape within the Peak District National Park. Richard Hodges is Director of the British School at Rome, and Senior Lecturer in Archaeology and Prehistory at Sheffield University.
