As Oliver Warner states, naval actions entail crises in which the differences are as remarkable as the similarities. He has recounted famous battles, the Spanish Armada and the Glorious First of June among others, always making new or controversial points: the role of the Dutch in 1588, for instance, was highly significant but it has been virtually overlooked; and, he asks, was the First of June so glorious? He also describes actions much less familiar, like the British capture of Manila during the Seven Years War (a combined operation mounted in India); and the battle between the Dutch and the Swedes in 1658, one of the most crucial encounters in modern history in that it decided for all time that Holland (and England) would never tolerate Swedish domination of the main passage to the Baltic. The naval Battle of Copenhagen too has overshadowed the military landings in Denmark which followed six years later, and which were equally portentous.
