Book Description PAPER MAP (Soft cover). Condition: Very Good. ### David & Charles: One-Inch OS Map of Lichfield,1970 (Birmingham and the Black Country) (Sheet No. 42) ### ## THIS MAP: Classified as VERY GOOD. This is the 1970 edition by David and Charles published by Courtesy of the Ordnance Survey. These maps are the reprint of the first editions of the one-inch Ordnance Survey of England and Wales. ## The Old Series of one-inch maps, sometimes known as the First Edition, have a long and chequered history. Even contemporaries' were perplexed by their development. Modern students have largely evaded the present, emphasising their limitations as historical documents. The note printed with this map may enable it to be used with more confidence as a record of the past: it is not concerned with an analysis of map content per se but with the map's history as a printed object from the date of first publication the printing reproduced here. Only through such an analysis of the states of the copper plate can the several horizons of the historical map be identified as a preliminary to topographical research. The Trigonometrical Survey of England and Wales was founded in 1721. The national one-inch map took three-quarters of a century to first regular sheet was published for Essex in 1805 and the last in 1873 for the Isle of Man. After 1873 maps remained in print (although issues of the New Series had commenced) and were not superseded until the early 1890s. From conception to completion, a century elapsed, and modifications were applied progressively not only to newly published but also, in part, to existing copper plates. Old Series maps thus vary widely from region to region and even to sheet. In design, they evolve from the original large sheets (36in x 24in) to the quarter sheets (18in x 12in), although the large sheet numbering, 1 to 110. for the whole series, was retained. The gap between the dates of survey publication varies from over twenty to a few years. South of a line from Hull to Preston, the field survey was a scale 2 in to 1 mile (with limited executed at 3in and 6in), but after that the maps were reduced from surveys at 6in (later 25in) to 1 mile, with correspondingly greater accuracy. There is more information within the map. ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. PLEASE, contact me for a shipping quotation. ###. No Author signature.
