`Marcus Brutus' is a Roman play with characters from Roman history but their speech and their utensils are very 20th century American and the play is set in a tenement in New York. The author is not afraid to caricature himself and the surrealistic touches are daring and funny, blending make-believe and reality. It has been highly successful on stage and is a delight to read.
`Silver Queen Saloon' is a Western with a lot of differences, a caricature and yet a play that stands up and convinces inside its own terms of reference. It can be performed as a musical or straight and the stock characteristics and situations are given unusual treatment. As Jude puts it: "Dagget is a one-road town. It bred graves and silver dreams." But the author has bred some unusual characters to which this volume introduces you.
