The stories of more than 400 familiar border-plants are told - the manner and date of their introduction, their legends and traditions, their horticultural development and the derivation of their names; in short, what might be described as their life stories. Except for a section on herbs, only hardy herbacious plants are included. There is a comprehensive bibliography and an index of English names. This new edition has been completely reset in larger format and extensively revised and enlarged to include many minor corrections and descriptions of seven additional genera and twenty-four new species.
