This is the first book to catalogue the work of the American architect and artist Adam Kalkin. Vertiginousin scope, that work is driven by an inquisitive impulse coupled with an unencumbered sense of what is possible. The houses that Kalkin builds embody the paradoxes and ambiguities that are more often the domain of the art object than of the domestic environment. By appropriating the lexicon of the warehouse - prefabricated metal Butler buildings, shipping containers, loading docks, industrial grating, scaffolding-he introduces an emotional ambiguity into an area of architecture that has long conformed to a limited set of affects. Neither conventional notions of comfort nor specific usage is encoded in the materials he uses or in the spaces he creates. The palatial volumes enclosed by his houses, together with the complexity of visual experiences they offer, make one feel that the spaces in which we live can themselves be transforming. The art that Adam creates (often in collaboration with Aernout Mik) is equal parts performance, conceptual art, kinetic construction, and play. Adam Kalkin is an architect and artist based in New Jersey. His work has been exhibited in New York, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Among his built projects are the Collector's House at the Shelburne Museum, Vermont, Home for A Hollywood Producer in Los Angeles, Martha's Vineyard House, and the Farm House, New Jersey.
