This copiously annotated bibliography traces the history of the East India Company by examining the printed materials issued during its first 185 years, from the award of Elizabeth I s Charter to the passing of William Pitt s India Act. It is the first large-scale bibliography of the Company to be published, describing a huge range of printed items, from Parliamentary Acts to satirical poems. Included are the Company s own petitions for the regular renewal of its privileges, the complaints of disaffected employees, the raging polemics of eighteenth-century pamphleteers, and the rousing oratory of Edmund Burke, along with practical works on navigation, lists of proprietors, and much other fascinating material.

Review:
"This book is a real accomplishment, representing original, painstaking, and enterprising work in an increasingly crowded field of company studies, which will certainly be of great use and interest not only to historians of British India but also to historians of early modern Britain, print culture, political economy, and many more besides. I certainly know it will be one East India Company book sure to be perched conspicuously within reach on my shelf for years to come."--Philip J. Stern, Duke University "H-Net "

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A clean and crisp hardback copy without a dust jacket-probably as issued. [I cannot find any examples of a copy with a jacket]. Burgundy cloth with gilt title lettering to spine. There is a little creasing at the tail of the spine, and a Foyles book label (in the form of a book-see image) remains attached to the bottom of the front paste-down. A Foyles barcode sticker (with the original printed price of £50) remains at the bottom of the lower cover. Overall, a very good hardback copy without a dust jacket, but with a couple of signs of where the book was originally purchased. Seller Inventory # ABE-1662885460348
