The glorious and mellow ruins of Rievaulx Abbey form the focal point of this delightful ramble. Across meadows, through woods and along quiet lanes, this short walk encourages a leisurely pace and offers the opporunity to explore the splendid remains of the old abbey or the garden 'temples' of Rievaulx Terrace looking down from above the valley.
By any standards Rievaulx is one of the most magnificent monastic houses in the country perhaps even the finest, combining the architectural splendour and completeness of Fountains with the picturesque setting of Bolton, its two great Yorkshire rivals. Founded in 1131 by Walter l'Espec, lord of nearby Helmsley, it was the first Cistercian monastery to be built in northern England.
