GEORGIAN POETRY 1911-1922 The Critical Heritage The 'Georgian' poets include some of the best known English poets of the early twentieth century, such as Edmund Blunden, Rupert Brooke, W. H. Davies, Walter de la Mare, Robert Graves, D. H. Lawrence, John Masefleld, Harold Monro, Isaac Rosenberg and Siegfried Sassoon. Timothy Rogers, in his Introduction, and in the selection from contemporary and later criticism, has given a valuable documentation in tracing the course of their fortunes and in suggesting a fair basis for appraisal. The name 'Georgian' was proudly applied to these poets by Edward Marsh, who edited live volumes of an anthology under the title Georgian Poetrji. The series achieved a success unparalleled by such a venture before or since. However, by 1922, the year of publication of the final volume, 'Georgian' had lost its meaning of modern and energetic, and had come to mean old-fashioned and reactionary, with unfair consequences to many of the individual contributors. The reviews in this volume range from 1913 to 1959, many written by some of the poets who featured in one or other of the anthologies. Other reviewers include T. S. Eliot, Edmund Gosse, Amy Lowell, Raymond Mortimer, Middleton Murry, Harold Nicolson and Edward Thomas. Also included are brief biographies of all forty Georgian poets. The Editor Timothy Rogers is Principal of the Bosworth College, a Leicestershire upper school and community college. He has had a life-long interest in the period and knew many of the leading figures, including Sir Edward Marsh. He is the editor of Rupert Brooke: A Reappraisal and Selection (Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1971) and School for the Community: A Grammar School Reorganises (Routledge & Kegan Paul, ii). Size: 8vo.
