Traditional psychiatry regards hallucinations as products of mental or organic disease, however, this text demonstrates that normal individuals also hallucinate and hence the disease model is brought into question. Biological theories proposing biochemical or neurological bases for hallucinations, for example in schizophrenia, are reviewed, as are four categories of psychological theory. The authors propose their own functional model, and develop an integrative account with reference to recent research in metacognition.
