Alastair, Marquis of Lingard, accepts a wager that he cannot play the high- wayman in Epping Forest for one month. His estranged parents, the Duke and Duchess of Kirkdale, make their own bets and the duke hires Sir Neil Vivien to ensure Lingard fails.
Lady Anne Lydford, the Earl of Lomax's daughter, is recovering from a broken romance. She goes to her aunt's house in Epping where she meets young Gem Murray. One evening Sir Neil, whilst in his cups, kidnaps Gem and promptly falls in love with her. To save Gem's reputation Anne dons the disguise of a highwaywoman and sets out to rescue her. Through a series of misunderstandings she believes it is the Marquis who is holding Gem. When Anne and Alastair meet they recognize at once their deep but hope- less passion for one another, Anne saddened because the Marquis ignores her plea to release Gem. The situation grows more complicated when the Duke orders his son to find Lady Anne, presumed lost in the Forest; the Marquis, having encountered Gem, believes her to be the Earl's daughter.
Only when the Duke and Duchess travel to Epping are the knots unravelled and the young lovers set free, the Kirkdales also reconciled when they discover at last that their own love has never died.
