Only one book of short stories by Virginia Woolf appeared in her lifetime, Monday or Tuesday. It contained eight stories. Until the publication of this book a mere 21 stories by her were readily available. This edition contains 45 stories and sketches, including 16 unpublished pieces. It brings together all the published shorter fiction and unpublished pieces, many of which were left in second or even third drafts. The stories have been arranged in chronological order so that the reader is offered new insights into Virginia Woolf's development as a writer. The unpublished pieces, written between 1906 and 1941, vividly illustrate her con-tinuingly evolving methods of presenting character and using perspective. In all the stories one can see her experimenting with narrative methods and themes that she often developed further in her novels. The book not only provides authoritative texts of each story but also notes giving essential bibliographical information, explaining where necessary how the text has been arrived at, and providing any necessary annotation.

VIRGINIA WOOLF (1882-1941) was one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century. An admired literary critic, she authored many essays, letters, journals, and short stories in addition to her groundbreaking novels.
