For undergraduate and graduate courses in Multicultural Education and Cultural Foundations.

This well-respected text helps students understand pluralism and the complexities of cultural backgrounds and how to use this knowledge successfully in the classroom. It appropriately describes seven critical microcultures to which students and teachers belong: class; ethnicity and race; gender; exceptionality; religion; language; and age. These microcultures form the foundation for understanding pluralism and multicultural education. Although this version has many new additions, the authors' goal remains the same―to help teachers deliver an equitable education for all students.

Synopsis:
A text designed to help future teachers understand multiculturalism and learn to apply non-biased, non-sexist, multicultural teaching methods to create more effective, enlightened classroom instruction. Using the characteristics of culture as a framework for discussion, the authors define multiculturalism as more than simple ethnicity, and show how individuals and families are members of a number of microcultures that reach beyond heritage or country of origin. Educational implications for each microculture are discussed, with specific recommendations for more effectively bringing each group into the educational process. Updating in the new edition includes discussion of such areas as the growing Mexican-American and Asian student populations, equity issues, homosexuality and adolescent substance abuse. Many new strategies for classroom and curriculum are offered and the end-of-chapter questions have been greatly enhanced. Pedagogical features include chapter introductions, objectives lists, summaries, and review questions. Readings and suggested readings lists appear throughout the text.
