Review:
The Ferengi are businessmen, dedicated to the pursuit of profit, and other species tend to view them with mistrust. Nevertheless, they do have their own code of behaviour, to which they adhere as rigorously as the Bajorans follow the Prophets or the Klingons pursue honour. This code is encapsulated in 285 Rules of Acquisition, and in Legends of the Ferengi Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe tell the stories and myths behind the formulation of 76 of these rules. Since they were first brought to the attention of humans in Ira Steven Behr's The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition six more rules have been added, including such gems as the 211th Rule: "Employees are the rungs on the ladder of success. Don't hesitate to step on them."

The anecdotes, illustrated with many black and white stills from the shows, are brief, each one a couple of pages at most but they help to illuminate aspects of Ferengi history and culture that don't get much of an airing in the TV shows, and any fans of the Ferengi will find much to interest and amuse them here. This is a book to dip into rather than read from cover to cover and as such it is a light and entertaining read. --Elizabeth Sourbut
