La maison est fort vieille, et le salon du rezde chaussée possède une antique cheminée monu mentale, style Louis XV, qu' on n'est pas peu surpris de trouver dans une jeune ville anglaise,' à deux mille lieues de l'europe. C est que cette maison fut autrefois la demeure de quelque patricien d'amsterdam, à l'époque lointaine où la puissante compagnie hollandaise deslndes Orientales était établie au Cap. Dans le vesti bule est installé le bar, l'inévitable bar cher aux Anglo - Seasons, où trône une majestueuse fille d'albion, qui distribue du matin au soir l'ale et le whiskey. J'occupe, au premier étage, une chambre très petite, dont la fenêtre à guillotine s'ouvre sur une longue cour étroite et humide, le long de laquelle règnent des vê randas peuplées de perroquets et de canaris du Cap. Malgré son nom pompeux, le Royal Hôtel est une déception: les chambres sont petites, mal meublées, mal éclairées, la table médiocre.
