Wo die Denkmäler, welche Mancini anführt, uns im Stiche lassen, da helfen uns zum Gluck die Dokumente, den Wirkungskreis des Malers von Viterbo wenigstens zeitlich zu umgrenzen. Er begegnet uns also zuerst in Rom als Mitglied der Akademie von San Luca, aber wir können zunächst nicht feststellen, welche Arbeit ihn damals beschäftigte. Denn die Fresken in Santo Spirito waren vollendet und den Grundstein von Sant' Agostino hat Estouteville erst am 1. November 1479 gelegt. In der Kapelle Sixtus IV. Aber, wie Mancini vermutet, hat Antonio nicht gemalt. Dass er damals jedoch lange in Rom geweilt hat, beweist seine Zugehörigkeit zur Akademie von San Luca, und dass er hier Einflüsse erfuhr, die für seine ganze Kunstrichtung bestimmend werden sollten.
