Excerpt from Secret Memoirs of the Court of Berlin
Middle and upper-middle class scientific culture had not yet extended much beyond the musical glasses and a pious craze to explore the polar region of the court circle. The conscious nether world revelled in envious awe as it got these glimpses of distant spheres and gloried as it found their denizens frail. It was the day of a Paul Pry press, before the advent of the instrument with telescopic range and microscopic penetration, which could not but slacken interest in one constellation by revealing so much of so many.
