Excerpt from The True Story of the Empress Eugénie
I have read that one of the Professors of Law at Harvard University, wishing to impress on the minds of his students how difficult it is to discover the truth, told five of them each to write an inde pendent report of an accident they had all witnessed simultaneously. The result of this was that when at the next lecture the reports were read, they all proved completely different.
This was only a new manner of arriving at the old verity so picturesquely expressed by Diogenes, and resounding ominously through the centuries in the words of Pilate, who when Jesus Christ told him that He had come into the world to give testi mony to the Truth, said What is Truth?
What is then the truth in regard to Eugenie de Montijo, who obtruded herself upon the history of the nineteenth century to such an extent that she and her husband became the most conspicuous personages of their day?
