Ernest Gellner, Martin Hollis, Robin Horton and Steven Lukes add to their earlier thoughts. They are joined by Barry Barnes, David Bloor, Jon Elster, Ian Hacking, W. Newton-Smith, Dan Sperber and Charles Taylor. Almost all the essays have been especially written for this volume. Reflective in tone and vigorous in style, they are offered as reports from a lively and changing front which cannot be divided into disciplines. This book will be an important stimulus for all who theorize about the nature of human understanding.
