The book challenges the multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization to stop advocating globalization policies that benefit the developed countries at the expense of the developing countries. In particular, it calls on the United States as the monolithic superpower that is uniquely placed to assume world leadership, to rise above selfish national interests, and confront the challenge of spearheading global equity.The book suggests, however, that the United Nations, for all its shortcomings, is still the body best placed to engineer balanced globalization on a world scale, provided it is reformed in a way that enhances significantly both its power and its international prestige.

About the Author

Dr. Peter Eliezer Temu graduated in 1974 from the Food Research Institute of Stanford University, California, with a PhD in the economics of agricultural marketing. A national of Tanzania, Dr. Temu spent his first ten years (1963-1973) in teaching and research: in Kenya, as economics tutor at the College of Social Studies, and later as Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Nairobi; and in Tanzania, as Director of the Economic Research Bureau, University of Dar es Salaam. From 1974 - 1977 he served as National Planning Controller in the Tanzanian Ministry of Finance and Planning, and later as Director of the Institute of Finance Management in Dar es Salaam. For over 19 years, from 1977 until his retirement in 1996, Dr. Temu worked for the United Nations as a professional economist, at various duty stations; devoting half the time to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (in Addis Ababa and Lusaka), and half to the United Nations World Food Council (in Rome and New York).
