The fictional character Jeremiah plays to fears and prejudices in the U.S. by attacking "symbols of evil" --- rampant crime, immorality, economic inequality, political corruption. Those approving of his actions include religious fundamentalists, white supremacists, law-and-order advocates, antifederalists; even members of the scientific elite assiduously courted by the terrorist.
After each terrorist attack, Jeremiah issues a chapter of the unfolding Book of Second Jeremiah, an "inspired" document forming the philosophical basis for "New America," a secessionist state the prophet proposes to establish in the upper Midwest.
Could he be successful? This novel examines the question of whether America can continue to make diversity its greatest strength, or whether it will become a fatal flaw.
