But in his personal life he suffered in a variety of ways: illness, divorce, struggles with alcohol.

For this biography I was able to consult London's manuscripts, letters, and personal papers. I also interviewed his daughter Becky before her death in 1992 and consulted with many Jack London scholars. My goal was to help readers see London as he actually was, to use the words of London and his acquaintances as much as possible, and to paint as complete and accurate a picture of this fascinating man as scholarship can allow.
