The author became interested in the effect on women of drinking when she heard of a baby born with defects similar to Down's syndrome. Doctors told the mother that the problems could have been caused by Foetal Alcohol Syndrome - the result of drinking during pregnancy. The author discusses the social pressures on women to drink and how society has accepted drinking as a means of being one of the boys. She describes the physical consequences of drinking - women are more prone to liver damage and other alcohol-related diseases than are men. They are more likely to develop digestive and nutritional problems as a consequence of drinking, and are more likely to become dependent on alcohol. A woman's response to alcohol may change during ovulation and menstruation. Finally, advice is offered to those who drink and want to stop, describing the help available through Alcoholics Anonymous, the medical profession and women's self-help groups.
