"Raising children", writes the author, "is the most important work in the world, the task at which we dare not fail." But it seems clear that people have failed, that society has lost its way, and that the betrayal of childhood is taking place on a global scale. From both sides of the Atlantic, evidence seems to be mounting that children are more and more deviant, more delinquent, more out of hand. If they grow up confused and ignorant, destructive and self-destructive, then the society that produces them must be so too. How has it come to this? Where are people going wrong - and where and how are they getting it right? This study tells the story of childhood, through time and across many cultures, from the birth of the child to the death of innocence that is called maturity. Rosalind Miles is the author of "The Women's History of the World".

The London Bookworm
(East Sussex, United Kingdom)

Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. The number of serious crimes committed by children under 16 in Britain has soared by 54 per cent in the last ten years. School arson alone now costs the country three times more every year than is spent on buying books. But to blame these children, the author argues, is a way of evading blame ourselves. Chgildren are born innocent, both harmless and powerless. if they grow up confused and ignorant, destructive and self-destructive, then the society that produces them must be so too. Every day the children who do not get what they deserve become the adults that no society wants. And they can, with justice, turn to us and demand, 'What did we do to deserve this?'. So how have we let it come to pass? Where are we going wrong, and where and how are we getting it right? In a study as epic in scope as its subject, the author of The Women's History of the World investigates the worldwide crisis of parenting and asks what we can do to help children become the kind of people society wants, needs and can value. 305 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
