David Caute's book not only describes these dramatic events across the international canvas but also explores the moral and intellectual arguments advanced by the New Left in support of their challenge to "bourgeois democracy". By 1970 the New Left was extinguished as an international force, yet, the radicalism, energy and life style of 1968 the author contends remain intensely relevant, twenty years later, to a new generation which shows signs of rediscovering the critical spirit. David Caute was formerly literary editor of the "New Statesman".
