It covers the modern countries of Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, North and South Yemen and the Gulf States. The text argues that the impetus for change in the Near East came primarily from within the region and can only be understood by study of internal forces. In addition examines the extraordinary stability of the state system that emerged after World War 1 and the post-1950 transformation of the region after the end of European domination.
