Grade 1-4 Based on a true story, this is a picture book with soft watercolor pictures but whose content is grim. Bodger and his master, an old man, beg for food and scavenge for it in trash bins. The old man dies, and Bodger is barricaded in the room with him for over a week, until he is rescued by police. The story, told from the dog's viewpoint, sounds melodramatic, but the writing is spare and not sensational. Painful and tragic events are handled realistically but not hopelessly. The dog is helped by the illustrator of the book and her friends and given a new home. Children who read this book alone may be frightened by it, but when read with and explained by an adult, it can help them to understand the abuse and neglect people and animals sometimes suffer.
