On Earth we are bombarded with information in the form of light, sound and electro-magnetic waves. The human senses filter most of this information out, and we experience life through five narrow windows on the world with the curtains barely open. Animals also use their senses to perceive their surroundings, but are receptive to a selection of information different from that of humans: dogs, for instance, have a sense of smell many times greater than our own, and goldfish can see the beam of light from a TV remote control. Linked to a six-part television series, the illustrations and text of this book are interwoven to reveal the remarkable perceptions and senses used by animals to gauge the world around them.

Review:
Take a weird and wonderful journey through the more bizarre side of Mother Nature's numerous manifestations with this full-colour illustrated book which accompanies the BBC TV series Supernatural. Brimming with a host of wonderful nature stills, John Downer's book explores all the most extraordinary and unbelievable examples of the seemingly paranormal observed in the natural world. With chapters that include "Extrasensory Perception", "The Paranormal", "Outer Limits" and "Close Encounters" we shouldn't be surprised to find a number of truly baffling phenomena, some of which really do strain the limits of credulity. Scientific investigation has provided us with at least partial explanations for the majority of these, although redefining them "natural" as opposed to "supernatural" doesn't make them any less wondrous; then there are still areas that lack any entirely convincing or comprehensive explanation. John Downer's extensive and engaging survey is a timeless treasury encompassing the most remarkable prodigies of nature and, as such, is certain to make a notable addition to any nature- lover's bookshelf. --Alisdair Bowles
