About the Author:
English author Flora Annie Steel (1847 1929) lived in India for more than two decades, where she wrote a popular history of the country and collected regional folktales. Arthur Rackham (1867 1939) was an English artist and a leading figure in the early 20th century's Golden Age of Illustration. He interpreted scenes from fairy tales, opera, and Shakespearean comedy with whimsical and romantic images that continue to enchant children and adults alike.
Synopsis:
In the darksome depths of a thick forest lived Kalyb the fell enchantress. Terrible were her deeds and few there were who had the hardihood to sound the brazen trumpet which hung over the iron gate that barred the way to the Abode of Witchcraft. Terrible were the deeds of Kalyb; but above all things she delighted in carrying off innocent new-born babes and putting them to death. (Excerpt)
