Hendrik Conscience, né Henri Conscience le 3 décembre 1812 à Anvers, mort le 10 septembre 1883 (à 70 ans) à Ixelles, est un écrivain belge d'expression néerlandaise Il est fils de Pierre Conscience, un natif de Besançon. Celui-ci avait été chef de timonerie dans la marine de Napoléon Bonaparte et fut nommé sous-directeur du port d'Anvers en 1811 quand la ville était française. Lorsque la ville fut soustraite à l'empire, Pierre resta. C'était une personne très excentrique, qui achetait et démontait les navires hors d'usage dont le port était plein après la paix. L'enfant grandit dans une vieille boutique remplie d'objets maritimes auxquels le père ajouta ensuite une collection de livres invendables, parmi ceux-ci, de vieux romans qui enflammèrent l'imagination de l'adolescent. Sa mère mourut en 1820. Le garçon et son jeune frère n'avaient pas d'autre compagnon que leur père. En 1826, Pierre se remaria avec une veuve beaucoup plus jeune que lui, Anna Catherina Bogaerts.
