The summer concert in St Petroc, Devon, was never intended to be a life-shattering event, yet for fourteen-year-old Roxanne Hawkins, one of the local farmer's daughters, it is the evening of a lifetime. Entranced by the lights, the magic and the greasepaint, she suddenly realizes that she wants to become part of this fascinating world.
So it should have come as no surprise to her parents, when, on the day of the St Petroc's Autumn Fair, Roxanne disappears. Taking all her worldly possessions, she runs away to London where she meets the music hall comedian Harry Bright - a suave and sophisticated fixer who, she knows, will act as her entrée into showbusiness. Roxanne adopts the stage-name Annie Breeze, and it isn't long before they begin to make a name for themselves as the highly popular double act, Bright and Breeze.
But at the height of her career, disaster strikes and Roxanne is forced to return to Devon. There, despite family pressure, she establishes a new life, miles away from the bright lights of the big city and, amid the peace and serenity of her own daffodil farm, she begins to accept that love is a thing of the past - or so she likes to imagine.

Emma Blair
Emma Blair is the pseudonym of Ian Blair. He was born in Glasgow and now lives in Devon.
