Joyce Windsor was born in Kent and, on leaving school, went to work for the Inland Revenue, subsequently passing the examinations necessary for promotion within the service. Moving to Liverpool, she became part of a fascinating circle, living next door to Fritz Spiegl and just around the corner from Beryl Bainbridge. A shortage of money in no way impeded the determined party-givers of that era and, as a devotee of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, she was delighted to meet people like Efrem Kurtz and François Poulenc.

She then moved south, first to Putney, then Dorset. In 1982 her husband died and she retreated to the Isle of Wight 'to die', but by chance hit upon a flourishing and companionable community of writers. Thus began one of the happiest periods of her life, which culminated in the publication of her first novel, A Mislaid Magic, its sequel, After the Unicorn, and Arriving in Snowy Weather, the third and final book in the Savernake sequence.
