Synopsis

Continuing their tradition of sensitivity, comprehensiveness, currency, and candor, Robert Crooks and Karla Baur offer much that is new and exciting while they continue to offer the same qualities you've come to expect from Crooks and Baur. You'll find thorough coverage of all major topics incorporated into every section, including sexual health issues; the very latest research, stories about the real experiences of real people from the 'Authors' Files'; and a writing style that is warm, frank, and nonjudgmental. In taddress diversity in even more detail than the last edition of this best-selling text. They also include new coverage of the latest research on such topics as the depiction of sex in the media, sex in cyberspace, gender identity issues, breast implants, prostate cancer treatments, contraception technology, sexual orientation, artificial insemination, and sexually transmitted diseases. From the first edition, the authors have shown their commitment to celebrating and highlighting cultural and social diversity; for the eighth edition, they have updated many of the cross-cultural examples, included more in-chapter coverage of multicultural differences, added more Sexuality and Diversity boxes, and provided more frequent examples of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals throughout. Nevertheless, the text title remains Our Sexuality--an explicit acknowledgment that, for all of our differences, we all share the human experience of many sexual and relationship matters. Such matters cross cultural boundaries and sexual orientation lines: the body's physiological arousal and response to pleasure; overcoming the green-eyed monster of jealousy and communicating more effectively; the variety of sexual behaviors that can be explored; treatment possibilities for sexual dysfunctions; the need to protect ourselves from STDs; how our sexual satisfaction can improve with age even as the body changes; and how we help those who have been victimized by sexual attack, etc.

Review

"There are many recent studies cited in the textbook and that's an advantage over many texts out there. I feel this text is so timely and up-to-date with my students. The student aids and self-help/instruction featured boxes (e.g., female and male Kegel exercises) are very informative, well-selected, and helpful to students. The quotations by participants or the authors' personal files are a wonderful way to connect with students because most students like to read stories rather than dry research findings and charts. In addition, this text is the best example I have seen in regard to contextualizing the findings of studies with racial/ethnic minorities."
