Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The author investigates how the (sic) national culture can be understood through a quantitative study of the books that were actually read (during the romantic period in the English-speaking world). As a result, he 'offers a picture of the past very different from those presented by traditional approaches.' This is a meticulously produced publication with listed illustrations (22, b/w), tables (25) and appendices (13, pp. 453-723), bibliography and index. The jacket's front cover features a painting of a bookstore on the Vijgendam, Amsterdam; painted by Johannes Jelgerhuis, 1820. As an ex-library book (University of Sussex, England), there is a transparent plastic covering which fixes the dj to the bookblock. There is also some standard library paraphernalia such as a label on the dj's spine and on the front pastedown (partly obscured by the jacket's flap - image); as well as a library stamp on the first fly leaf and on the book's bottom edge. In the first chapter, Reading and its Consequences, there are a few sentences/key passages underlined in pencil (pp. 10, 11, & 13) but nowhere else, as far as one can see. The book is in overall very sound condition but please note that it looks like a page (ffep) has been removed (some torn edges remain just in sight along the book's gutter - see image). pp. xxix, 765/8vo (medium octavo). Please note that because of the weight of this book (2kg+) and, depending on destination, we may request an additional payment to cover any extra shipping/postage charges. Abe2252.
