This second edition of Phycology, like the first, is designed to serve both as a textbook for a one-semester course in the study of algae and also as a basic reference on modern concepts in this area of research. The second edition divides the algae into four natural groups: procaryotic, red and green, euglenoids and dinoflagellates, and cryptophytes, yellow-brown and brown algae. Each chapter includes coverage of the cytology, morphology, physiology, life cycles, ecology, systematics, and in some cases the economic utility of the algal groups, all presented in a manner that can be understood by readers with a basic course in biology. Biochemical and ultrastructural investigations that have shaped recent concepts in phycology are emphasised, and particular attention is given to the algae that are commonly found in freshwater and marine habitats and are most likely to be encountered by students in the field. This updated and expanded integration of classical and modern phycological knowledge will be a valuable guide and reference to phycologists from the college sophomore to the senior research level.

Review:
"Lee's book is a salutary attempt to review selected recent literature couching this information in general, background knowledge available from classical texts...Lee injects humor into his book particularly in his defense of the blue algae. His style is easy to read, terms are in bold face followed by various synonyms and his book closes with a very helpful glossary...Overall, this book is a welcome addition to the field of phycology and a very readable review of many aspects of this diverse discipline." Bulletin of Marine Science "All in all, Phycology is an outstanding introductory text which is enhanced by occasional anecdotal information, such as finding fossil coccoliths in classroom chalk...I, for one, expect this book to find its way onto most all phycologists' desks and into many of their classrooms." BioScience "Lee provides an excellent introduction to general phycology." Choice ."..certain books...need to be used, dipped into for specific tasks to see if they are up to the job....This second edition of Robert Lee's Phycology is just such a book and I'm pleased to say that it is up to the job!....I can thoroughly recommend this book." Robert Edyvean, New Phytologist
Book Description:
This fourth edition integrates information from nucleic acid sequencing studies with classic material on life histories, cytology, ecology and economic importance of the algae including detailed life-history drawings; the emphasis is on algae commonly covered in phycology courses, and encountered by students in marine and freshwater habitats.
