The Yanomami Indians of the Venezuelan Forest are to some extent known already to the outside world through the books that have been written, and the films that have been made about them. In this book, Jacques Lizot allows the Indians to speak for themselves. The result is a rich, evocative and intimate account of the way in which they perceive, and feel about, their world. Presented in the form of stories told by a few key Yanomami individuals, the book offers little analysis, but instead leaves it to the reader to develop his or her own interpretations. It will be valuable for teachers and students of anthropology, both for the new and well-documented ethnographic material it contains, as well as for its alternative approach to writing ethnography. It is also unique in the way in which it conveys the atmosphere, talk, noise, smells, images, and flavour of Amazonia and its Indians, and it will therefore appeal to any reader interested in the world's contemporary non-industrial peoples.

Review:
'... an impressive (and equally disturbing) account of Yanomami life and myth ... Lizot is a poet for the Yanomami.' Redmond O'Hanlon in In Trouble Again

'... an outstanding work ... deserves to be widely read, not just by anthropologists but by all who have an interest in understanding tribal societies.' Journal of Latin American Studies

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Gut. XV, 200 p.: Ill. Einband berieben, Buchschnitt leicht angeschmutzt, sonst ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen / Binding rubbed, book edges slightly soiled, otherwise a good and clean copy without markings. - The Yanomami Indians live in small groups of about forty individuals in the depths of the Venezuelan forest. They are to some extent already known to the outside world through the books that have been written, and the films that have been made, about them. In this book, Jacques Lizot, who has lived among the Yanomami for over fifteen years, allows the Indians to speak for themselves. The result is a rich, evocative, and intimate account of the way in which the Yanomami perceive, and feel about, their world. Presented in the form of stories told by a few key Yanomami individuals, with whose personalities and characters the reader quickly becomes familiar, the book focuses on three areas of Yanomami life: daily experience in the village; shamanism, magic, and sorcery; and relations of war and alliance with other villages. Lizot offers little analysis of the material he provides, leaving it instead to the reader to develop his or her own interpretations of it. The book will be valuable for teachers and students of anthropology, both for the new and well-documented ethnographic data it contains, as well as for its alternative approach to writing ethnography. It is also unique in the way in which it conveys the atmosphere, talk, noise, smells, images, and flavor of Amazonia and its Indians, and it will therefore appeal to any reader interested in the world's contemporary nonindustrial peoples. / Contents Foreword by Timothy Asch Preface to the English edition Prologue I The great shelter from day to day 1 Ashes and tears 2 Love stories 3 Women's lives II The magical powers 4 The path of the spirits 5 Spells 6 Eaters of souls III War and alliance 7 The hunt 8 The pact Appendixes (Map) Notes on phonetic transcription Glossaries Yanomami terms South American flora and fauna Other works on the Yanomami.
