Book Description Cloth, gilt cover-initials, 4to, 29 cm, slipcased, 128 pp, colour plates. Reproduced from the Illuminated Manuscript belonging to the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France texts translated from the French by Marianne Sinclair. The book first appeared in French as " Les heures d'Etienne Chevalier". From the preface : The illustrations of The Hours of Etienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet rank among the greatest masterpieces of fifteenth-century painting - a view shared today by art historians of every nationality. In the light of our rapidly increasing knowledge of manuscript illumination, which completes our information on mural, panel, and stained-glass painting, scholars are rediscovering the artistic and historical importance of these miniatures. Indeed, these illuminations have been the object of unwavering admiration since the Count of Bastard, in 1836-1837, and the remarkable connoisseur Waagen, in 1839, wrote so well about them. But equally apparent is the fact that these pages have never been thoroughly explored; their many enigmas have yet to be resolved. Such a high appreciation of Fouquet's art is all the more remarkable when we recall the extent to which the fifteenth century abounds in masterpieces of an extraordinarily diversified forcefulness or delicacy. This was the period, between 1440 and 1480, when Fra Angelico, Piero delta Francesca, Antonello da Messina, Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini; Rogier van der Weyden, Dirk Bouts and Hugo van der Goes; Konrad Witz, Michael Pacher and Martin Schongauer; Jaime Huguet, Bartolome Bermejo, and Nuno Gonçalves, and so many other major painters were at work. But in the miniatures painted for Etienne Chevalier - no larger than a man's hand - Fouquet is their peer, and in this international chorus of masters, Fouquet's is an unmistakable voice. His art conferred upon the French painting of his century an equally recognizable identity, Fouquet is the first great interpreter in painting of a concept of life, of man and nature, which could only belong to the civilization of France.
