Nonetheless it behoves the Biblioteca Marciana, as the custodian of this rare and beautiful work, to welcome the publication of this splendid volume and to congratulate all those whose hard work and painstaking expertise have contributed to so fine a result - a result worthy of this incomparable jewel of Flemish miniature painting in its heyday. Turning these superbly printed pages, one feels the presence of a long line of scholarly devotees of the Breviary, from the first of them, Jacopo Morelli, to the former directress of the Marciana, the late Signora Tullía Gasparrini Leporace, who seventeen years ago wrote an illuminating introduction to a volume reproducing the calendar pages and had since been toying with the idea of doing the same for all the pages containing miniatures, as has been done here." from the introduction: "The Breviary is for Franciscan use and consists of some 832 parchment folios. Written in two columns in the Gothic minuscule script which continued to be practised until about the third decade of the sixteenth century, it contains more than a hundred pages of miniatures. These are partly or, in the case of the pages that are decorated with smaller miniatures inset in the text or embellished with initials, completely surrounded by a very regular border. The greater part of the codex is enlivened by a border in one of the vertical margins, and by initials, likewise illuminated with studied elegance." Fine in Very Good gilt-blocked slipcase.
