1. Die Semitistik, die, was Sprachvergleichung betrifft, doch die Lehrmeisterin der Indogermanistik war, ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten nicht unwesentlich hinter dieser zurückgeblieben (p. Haupt, Z. D. M. G., XXXIV, p. 763, Ende). Es liegt dies zum Teil wohl an dem „ehernen Charakter (wie man gesagt hat) der semitischen Sprachen mit ihrer starren Dreibuchstabigkeit, die sie so weit von den sonst naheliegenden Sprachgruppen zu unterscheiden scheint. Und doch ist dieser Charakter gewiss nicht der ursprüngliche, wenigstens nicht für den, der an eine nähere Verwandtschaft des Semitischen mit dem Hamitischen (aegyptischen) glaubt. Freilich, so lange wir noch Formen wie Dan. 2, 16, n,; Dan. 3, 24, am, Gen. 29, 19, np_. Gen. 6, 21. Als Verkürzungen oder Contractionen ansehen und andrerseits die vierbuchstabigen Verba als Ausnahmen betrachten, so lange wird für uns eine unausfüllbare Kluft zwischen dem Semitischen und allen übrigen Sprachen bestehen. Im Indogermanischen 2) hat man doch lange schon aufgehört, Formen wie é'-p.aö-ov, 66-g etwa von Wurzeln wie pav6 oder gar p.av6av, özöo oder özäw ableiten zu wollen.
