Auf germanischem Gebiet ist der graminati sche Wechsel. Der durch K. Verners epochemachenden Aufsatz gedeutet und zur wesentlichen Stütze für die Erschliessung der idg. Betonung geworden ist, so viel auch im einzelnen darüber geschrieben ist, noch nicht genugend ausgebeutet. Man vermisst namentlich eine Sammlung aller Fälle, zum wenigsten aus den älteren Sprachperioden. Es war meine Absicht, diese Lucke auszufüllen. Doch erkannte ich bald, dass die auf eine vollständige Sammlung verwendete Mühe mit den von mir verfolgten Zwecken in keinen Einklang zu bringen war; ich überzeugte mich, dass ich nichts wesentlich neues, nichts anderes hätte bieten konnen, als sich aus dem all gemein zuganglichen Material bereits gewinnen liess. Der grammatische Wechsel ist, wie ich verschiedentlich bemerkt habe, durchaus kein untrügliches Kennzeichen der Betonung. Gerade auf dem Gebiete der maskulinen a-stamme ergab sich aus anderen Gründen die Unrichtigkeit bisher ziemlich verbreiteter Anschauungen.
