Below him, on the same side, were two Old ladies and an old gentleman, trying to get themselves into the local atmosphere, with the aid of Baedeker. The gentleman would read a passage, while the ladies put their heads close to his and to the book. Then he would look up and around with a puzzled air. A few gestures of conjecture, of conference, of contradiction would follow, and would gradually resolve themselves into a smile of weary content ment. Then another dose of Baedeker.
