Excerpt from Der Grosse Wolfdieterich

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a study of the German epic poem known as the 'Great Wolfdietrich', the only extant version of a widespread medieval narrative cycle. The version we have today, which dates to the second half of the 13th century, is part of a set of German heroic poetry collected in the 16th century and known as the Heldenbuch. While the poem has attracted much attention from scholars in Germany and elsewhere, this will be the first ever English translation of the full text. The volume will also include a full critical and historical introduction, which will discuss the complex manuscript tradition, full philological and literary commentary, and a detailed analysis of the poem within the broader context of heroic poetry and medieval storytelling. It will be of interest to scholars and students of medieval German literature, philology, and those with an interest in medieval folklore and storytelling.
