Se edificó tan suntuoso monumento sobre una eminencia junto al puente de San Martín y la puerta del Cambron, en el solar que ocupaban las casas de D. Alonso Álvarez de To - ledo, Contador Mayor que había sido de Enrique IV.
En el exterior dividen el ábside en cinco compartimientos estribos muy resaltados que terminan en pináculos. Estos paños están decorados con arcos ornamentales; en cada uno de los dos de los extremos se abre una ventana con arco de lanceta, adornada con vidrieras de colores, que se conservan casi íntegras.
