It arose phoenix like in fresh vigour from every attack, and com bined with its ethereal beauty a sting as piercing as that of a wasp. James mcneill Whistler was the son Of Major George Washington Whistler, whose father, a well-born Irish gentleman, emigrated to America in the early part of the nineteenth century.
