This excellent text is the result of over 30 years of teaching university courses on continuum mechanics. The author's lecture notes have been adopted by professors at other universities and now these notes have been refined and converted into a book. It serves as a learning tool for all levels of engineers and advanced engineering students. It features heavily solved examples and exercises that benefit the reader by clearly demonstrating the ideas discussed; these will form about 60% of each chapter. This book provides an up to date, practical explanation of continuum mechanics that will appeal to students and practising engineers alike. It features many solved examples and exercises that demonstrate the ideas presented. It correlates ideas with concepts learned in lower level undergraduate classes, in order to make the material more accessible and comprehensible to a wider range of students. It is written in a clear and easy-to-read style and provides a thorough overview of non-linear continuum mechanics. It features applications using numerical calculation tools (for example in electronics, materials science and surgery), with mathematical coverage geared towards engineering students. This publication is ideal for third year undergraduates/graduates, researchers in civil and mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, aerospace and geological engineering and also applied maths advanced undergrad and graduate students, and practising engineers.

From the Back Cover:
As the ever–growing capabilities of numerical tools are being used to simulate how fluids and solids respond to high tempuratures and severe loads, a fundamental understanding of the theory of large coupled thermo=mechanical deformations will play an ever–increasing role. This requires a sound understanding of the basic principles of nonlinear continuum mechanics such as those given in this textbook. This book differs from several others in the market in that it provides numerous example problems from every day life which should help develop a better understanding of nonlinear theory. The book is oriented more toward engineers then mathematicians.

After briefly reviewing the mathematical preliminaries in Chapter 2, the theory of large deformations of a continuum is developed in subsequent chapters. Special emphasis is placed on constitutive relations. Theories developed in earlier chapters are illustrated through solutions of several nonlinear and linear problems in latter chapters.
