From the Publisher:
Simply an incredible read
Upon reading NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS for the first time, I was simply blown away by the craft with which David Marion Wilkinson writes. It is easy to see why the book won the Violet Crown Award, was selected as Editor's Choice by the review of Texas Books, and is highly lauded by writers of all genres. For the book is simply magnificent on many levels. For one, it is an incredibly gripping story involving multi-dimensional characters, told in a style that instantly pulls you in to their lives on thr frontier. To this end, the book crosses genres -- its action rivals that of western greats like L'Amour and McMurtry; the saga revolving around the family of Remy Fuqua is every bit as compelling as John Jakes' work; and like Michener, Wilkinson's carefully researched historical basis educates the reader about one of the most savage, difficult and important periods of North American history. As such, NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS involves all of the elements that make a superb epic, and one of the best pieces of historical fiction I have ever read. And I'm not the only one who thinks so. Below are just some of the praise the book has garnered. It is interesting to note that so many lauded authors, who are involved with many different genres, were compelled enough to not only commend the book, but were moved enough to discuss and interpret the themes and issues NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS elicits: "NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS presents a balanced and very human view of Texas history, the tragic clash of cultures so different...that conflict was inevitable no matter how desperately some might have wished for peace. Though the story is about Texas, the same cultural battles continue to be a blight on mankind today the world over." -- Elmer Kelton, 6-time Spur Award winning author of THE TIME IT NEVER RAINED "Wilkinson's novel crackles with his high energy and love of story" -- Sandra Scofield, NAtional Book Award finalist "I found it fascinating....Readers will learn a great deal from this book while enjoying every word." -- William H. Goetzmann, Pulitzer Prize-winning author "NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS is a page turner. It's detail, historical accuracy,a nd fast-moving dialogue is an exciting addition to the growing collection of Texas-in-the-making novels." -- Liz Carpenter
From the Author:
Author's Comment on Signet's Edition of NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS
I'm pleased to offer readers this latest, abridged edition of NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS. This title represents my first foray into the mass market arena, which may prove to be some adventure, as this is the first time this novel has been exposed to a national audience. We'll see what happens.

For a discussion of what I feel this novel is about, I refer the reader to the comments on the Boaz editions I posted on Amazon some time ago. None of this has changed. In regards to this latest release, I can say that I was initially leery of abridging the text in any shape or form. My anxieties settled immediately, however, when I sat down with Signet editor, Dan Slater, to begin what was virtually a painless process. Dan proved to be a professional of skill and intellect, and he's always maintained a faith and passion for this novel. In the end, we cut very little, merely tightening throughout. Once I committed myself to the abridgment--once I had my teeth in it--by God, I deleted some things and edited others on my own initiative. Signet's mass market edition turned out to be a second chance to get things "right"--to hone the language and clarify the themes, without ever once sacrificing the story's power and integrity. Signet now offers NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS in an edition its author wants you to read, learn from, and most importantly, enjoy. I've always been proud of this novel. What's new is that NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS is now available in its strongest and least expensive edition.
