For a discussion of what I feel this novel is about, I refer the reader to the comments on the Boaz editions I posted on Amazon some time ago. None of this has changed. In regards to this latest release, I can say that I was initially leery of abridging the text in any shape or form. My anxieties settled immediately, however, when I sat down with Signet editor, Dan Slater, to begin what was virtually a painless process. Dan proved to be a professional of skill and intellect, and he's always maintained a faith and passion for this novel. In the end, we cut very little, merely tightening throughout. Once I committed myself to the abridgment--once I had my teeth in it--by God, I deleted some things and edited others on my own initiative. Signet's mass market edition turned out to be a second chance to get things "right"--to hone the language and clarify the themes, without ever once sacrificing the story's power and integrity. Signet now offers NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS in an edition its author wants you to read, learn from, and most importantly, enjoy. I've always been proud of this novel. What's new is that NOT BETWEEN BROTHERS is now available in its strongest and least expensive edition.
