"Oneness" was written after extensive research through the world’s great religious scriptures. During this research, I found that many universal religious principles are expressed almost word-for-word in the central teachings of the different religions. As stated in the book’s introduction:
"Throughout the ages, the scriptures of all religions have proclaimed that humanity is one great family. This is a simple truth, and it is simply and directly stated in every religion. In fact, almost all the principles that are associated with religious thought are shared by every religion. The Golden Rule, Love Thy Neighbor, Honor Thy Father and Mother, Speak Truth, It is More Blessed to Give Than to Receive—these principles and others are common to all religions and are very similarly expressed in each."
A selection from "Oneness" is included below, demonstrating how the specific principles contained in the book are expressed in the actual words of each religion’s scriptures:
Love Thy Neighbor
A new commandment I give to you, That you love one another, even as I have loved you ... By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Christianity
Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Judaism
A man obtains a proper rule of action by looking on his neighbor as himself. Hinduism
Full of love for all things in the world, practicing virtue in order to benefit others, this man alone is happy. Buddhism
Seek to be in harmony with all your neighbors; live in amity with your brethren. Confucianism
Regard Heaven as your Father, Earth as your mother, and all things as your brothers and sisters. Shintoism
Contained in "Oneness" are more than thirty such religious principles, including, among others:
The Golden Rule, There is One God, Speak Truth, More Blessed to Give Than to Receive, Heaven is Within, Love Thy Neighbor, Blessed are the Peacemakers, As Ye Sow So Shall Ye Reap, A Man is Known by His Deeds--Not by His Religion, Better to Rule the Spirit, Wisdom is More than Riches, Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone, Do Not Harm Anything, Blessed to Forgive, Be Slow to Anger, Judge Not, Follow the Spirit of the Scriptures--Not the Letter, Honor the Elderly, God is Love, Man is Created in God’s Image, Prayers of the Religions, And others.
"Oneness" was published by Fawcett Columbine, a division of Random House. A nationwide bestseller, "Oneness" continues to be widely distributed. As the author, I am pleased to receive comments from readers. Many people purchase the book as a gift for others with whom they wish to share their beliefs that the world is one great family, and that all religions are branches of the same tree of life.
