In the high summer of 1942, rural Somerset seems far from the war. yet not even the iron rule of Granny Sanderson can prevent the tentacles of fear from infiltrating the country-house tranquillity of Cutcombe Hall, where smouldering passions, guilty secrets and terrifying possibilities are poised to erupt in a pyrotechnic explosion of outrageous brilliance.
"Reeking with malice and lust... a genuine talent for constructive alarm"
THE GUARDIAN
"A galaxy of oddballs... excellent... majestically funny... bears comparison with P.G.Wodehouse, yet Salaman somehow stretches this comic manner to cover the deeper springs of human motivation"
TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT
"Deliciously piquant and affectionate observation"
COSMOPOLITAN
"He does both the comedy and the thriller in a commanding, knowing and individual way"
LONDON REVIEW OF BOOKS
"Baroque characters, witty sex and stylishly funny"
