This second edition updates aspects of patient management, particularly for those who have had psychotic illnesses and have some continued long-term disability. The chapter on the Mental Health Act has been completely revised, and those aspects of treatment which have changed within the decade, particularly alterations in types of medication and their usage have been updated. Areas of psychiatry which have been particularly newsworthy in recent years such as child abuse, sexual abuse, the psychiatric problems associated with Aids and tranquillizer abuse have been given specific attention. The general format of the book has, however, been retained and the emphasis remains on a description of the orthodox standard National Health Service practice of the specialty of the type the average individual who needs to have contact with the psychiatric services is likely to experience.
