Pour se maintenir et durer, ils doivent renouveler leur substance qui s'écoule, se recom poser à mesure qu'ils se décomposent, et réparer par des reconstructions incessantes les pertes continuelles que cause un effrayant travail de démolition. La vie a souvent été comparée à un foyer où brûle du combustible et qui ne tarderait pas à s'éteindre s'il n'était régulièrement entretenu. Plus elle est active, plus elle réclame de res sources d'aümentation. Les animaux ont à cet égard plus d'exigences que les végétaux parce qu'ils dépensent davan tage, et l'homme en a plus que les animaux, parce que sa vitalité est exceptionnellement intense.
